Process
A functional barbecue reimagined as a permanent sculptural installation.

About the project
Rethinking the Barbecue
Barbecues are often designed with a focus on function over form, prioritising practicality and mobility. This project challenges that approach by creating a design that performs as a fully functional barbecue while also existing as a sculptural object. When not in use, it remains on display year-round, naturally weathering in its environment and removing the need for unattractive protective covers.
Challanges
Design Fabrication
The final outcome was developed around a CAD file for the mild steel frame to support the cantilevered work top. The intended purpose is for the frame to be sunk into gravel or grass to mask the base steel supporting frame to give the illusion of the cantilevered top supported by the 45 degree upright.

Summary
The form was developed through an iterative process combining card modelling, Fusion 360 CAD development, and 3D printing. This exploration led to the final geometry, which was further tested through the creation of a 1/5 scale model as part of the material investigation.
