Compact restaurant proposal

Compact restaurant proposal

A pop-up dining venue exploring adaptable, spatial design.

About the project

Background of the brief.

This project involved designing a sushi bar within a 20ft shipping container, inspired by the industrial character of Bristol docks. The brief emphasised transportability through a pop-up style venue, prompting an exploration of how a compact structure could expand into a functional dining environment. Using Fusion 360, I developed concepts based on RV-style hydraulic systems, allowing the container to extend and create additional usable space while maintaining its mobility.

Challanges

CAD Development

The design was developed in Fusion 360, where I created a detailed CAD model incorporating both interior and exterior lighting. This project also marked my first exploration of scene building, producing fully rendered visuals. The final scenes were contextualised with surrounding shipping containers, trees, and fencing to enhance depth and realism.

Summary

Iteration Exploration

Iteration Exploration

Through three distinct design iterations, I explored a range of layouts, skylight configurations, and fold-out mechanisms to maximise usability. This iterative process led to a final concept that transforms a compact container into a flexible, multi-space dining environment. I also experimented with a balance of indoor and outdoor seating, alongside more intimate dining areas inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine.
