Rethinking How We Read Time

Rethinking How We Read Time

A mechanical watch that challenges conventional time-telling by obscuring the display, encouraging slower, more intentional interaction.

About the project

Context and Concept

This project explores how altering familiar systems can change user behaviour. Rather than prioritising instant readability, the aim was to design a timepiece that invites interpretation. By disrupting the expected format of a watch, the design encourages users to engage more consciously with time.

Challanges

Design and Mechanism

Instead of traditional rotating hands, the design fixes the hands in place while the numbers rotate around them. This reversal of movement required careful consideration of internal mechanics, particularly in developing gear ratios that accurately separate and control hours, minutes, and seconds.

Summary

Design and Development

Design and Development

The project involved extensive experimentation with mechanical systems to achieve precise and reliable motion. Through iterative testing and refinement, the final outcome balances functionality with conceptual intent, maintaining accurate timekeeping while presenting it in a more unconventional and engaging format.
