Bringing Songbirds to the Balcony

Bringing Songbirds to the Balcony

The evolution of the Rural Feeder, adapting the pest-resistant feeding to urban environments, supporting songbirds while enhancing balcony spaces.

About the project

Context and Opportunity

Building on the Rural Feeder project, this design shifts focus to urban balconies. Spaces that often lack accessible wildlife. The aim was to create a feeder that not only supports small songbirds but also enriches compact outdoor environments through the integration of food, water, and planting.

Challanges

Design Approach

The project continues to develop weight-sensitive mechanisms to deter urban pests such as rats, squirrels, and larger birds. Alongside function, the design prioritises a clean, modern aesthetic suited to contemporary living spaces, encouraging regular interaction with wildlife.

Iteration Exploration

Iteration Exploration

Forms and functions were explored through iterative sketching and CAD modelling, with exploded diagrams used to refine both the internal mechanism and overall composition. The final outcome is a multifunctional feeder that balances practicality, visual appeal, and environmental engagement.
